Jacksonville University recently recognized two of our own, President Kate McAfoose and Founder Matthew Chang, PE, among its 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, highlighting their remarkable leadership, innovation, and impact both on campus and beyond.
Honoring Visionary Leadership
During JU’s annual Homecoming & Family Weekend, the University celebrated alumni who exemplify exceptional professional achievement and service to their communities. This year, both Kate and Matthew were honored:
Kate McAfoose, named the Scott Amos Recent Alumnus of Distinction, was recognized for her work leading Chang Robotics and founding Curabotics, where she drives innovation at the intersection of robotics, healthcare, and engineering. Her leadership has shaped initiatives such as the world’s largest autonomous robotic system and a groundbreaking hospital pilot program reducing nurse burnout and improving patient care.
Matthew Chang, recipient of the Executive Alumnus of the Year Award from JU’s Davis College of Business & Technology, was celebrated for his pioneering contributions to autonomous systems and collaborative robotics. His work has positioned Jacksonville as a hub for robotics innovation, with Chang Robotics’ Robot Studio on the JU campus serving as a living lab for students and healthcare professionals alike.
A Shared Commitment to Innovation and Community
Together, Kate and Matthew represent the spirit of “purpose-driven innovation” that defines Chang Robotics. Both are deeply connected to JU — not just as alumni, but as mentors, collaborators, and advocates for future leaders in technology and business.
Their achievements reflect the company’s core values: engineering excellence, bold vision, and community impact. Whether advancing robotics in manufacturing and healthcare or mentoring emerging professionals, Kate and Matthew continue to embody what it means to lead with both head and heart.
“It’s humbling to be recognized by our alma mater,” said Chang. “Jacksonville University has been part of our story from the very beginning — it’s where big ideas and bold thinking are encouraged.”
“I’m proud to be part of a community that celebrates innovation and purpose,” McAfoose added. “This recognition is really about the teams and mentors who’ve shaped our journey.”
Looking Ahead
As Chang Robotics continues to expand its impact through automation, investment, and education, these honors serve as a reminder of how far the company’s JU roots have grown and how they continue to inspire what’s next.
Congratulations, Kate and Matthew, and go Phins! 🐬
